The Influence of Grades in General Class Courses on the Accomplishments in Major Courses of Visual Optics Students
Lee Seong-Jae

Abstract
Purpose: We intended to help construct the curriculum of general education and basic science courses by analysing the accomplishments in major courses of the students majoring in Visual Optics.

Methods: We calculated the correlation of GPA with grade points of each general education and basic science course. Influence of the accomplishments in major courses was calculated using a statistical program.

Results: The subjects showing the highest correlation value ~0.69 with GPA are Math I and Introduction to Visual Optics I. Physics I showed high correlation value ~0.65 with GPA as well. The correlation of general education and basic science courses with main subjects such as Ocular Optics I, Physical Optics I, Geometrical Optics I, and Contact Lenses I, which require more theoretical study, showed relatively high correlation with Math I and Physics I. Ophthalmic Dispensing I, which requires more experimental study, showed relatively high correlation with Korean language.

Conclusions: In order to increase the accomplishments in major courses in the Department of Visual Optics, education in Math, Physics, Korean language, and Introduction to Visual Optics are more important but education in foreign languages is less important. Also, it is considered that education in Chemistry and Biology are necessary to some extent.
